A Conversation with USU Parking
Update from Parking

Parking received complaints from residents residing in the Townhomes, on the west end, regarding insufficient parking.  Parking responded to these complaints by allowing residents to vote on some different permit options.  Only 10 residents out of 32 voted. The majority vote was in favor of leaving the parking situation as is and they reported that parking is not an issue for them.  The Parking office appreciates those who took the time to provide feedback regarding this situation.  They want residents to be happy and feel that they are being heard, which was the purpose of the vote [only the residents in the area of the townhomes where the complaints were coming from were asked to participate in this vote because of the old adage: “Why fix something that isn’t broken?”].

Q&A with Parking

Q: What kind of enforcement is happening?
A: Parking does enforce MASA parking lots. Approximately 400 tickets per year are issued around Aggie Village.

Q: Does Parking patrol in the evenings?
A: There is one person patrolling all areas of campus until 9:00pm.  If a vehicle does not have the correct permit then residents may contact USU Police to come issue a citation.

Q: Why make the differentiation on our parking permits between the Townhouses and Aggie Village if there is no enforcement of that policy? Could we have individual parking per apartment for the townhouses?
A: The differentiation of parking lots is an issue because it requires a lot of signs, creating sign pollution and expense.  Individual parking spaces are too costly.  We follow a standardized procedure for reserved parking, which includes signage for each stall. Painting stall numbers is not an option because of the environment we live in – they would either get washed off or covered up by snow.  Parking expenses are kept minimal for residents with the current permit system.  A switch to reserved parking would result in parking permits being increased to $500 per permit, the standard rate across campus.

Q: Where may visitors park?
A: Residents may purchase day permits for $1 in the MASA office. Frequent visitors may choose to purchase a yellow permit for $24 per year.

Q: Can additional visitor parking/yellow section be provided on the East side of Aggie Village?
A: Additional visitor parking would take up permit parking, taking away parking from residents who live in that area. Although parking lots are not filling to capacity at this time, they will in the future and these spaces need to be reserved for those residents who will need them in the future.

Q: What if a resident who receives a parking ticket moves his ticket to my car?
A: Technically by moving their ticket to your car, they are discarding their situation. They have been notified of their violation, and it is still up to them to pay their ticket. That won’t affect you at all.

Q: Where can guests park in West Stadium Villa?
A: The best options are to visit the MASA office for a day pass or park across the street.

Q: Why doesn’t USU boot cars like other apartment complexes?
A: On-campus residents are given the chance to make mistakes.  If you live off campus and park in the wrong stall then you are automatically booted without any chances.  It is also important to USU to raise the image of Parking, which is happening.  People are now having positive experiences when they come to campus rather than negative experiences with Parking.

Q: Is there a way to better inform residents where they can and cannot park?
A: Yes! We will try to provide residents with some sort of map that shows where they can park.
